Welcome Back to School!!

Hello and welcome to Room 228! My name is Shallyn Dunbar and I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher this year! This is my 12th year teaching and I am so excited to be here at Kalapuya! I have been married for 12 years to my husband, Ryan, we have 3 wonderful children (Jake 10, Shelby 7 and Lilly 3) and we also have a labradoodle named Porter. We have some super activities planned this year including: 2 field trips, a fall concert, 3 visits from our animal “specialist” Bobbi Sneed and many more!! I am looking forward to a successful and rewarding year. My hours are 8-4, I would also be happy to talk with you in person. Just let me know! Following are some highlights about school and our classroom. Friday Folders: This Kalapuya folder (black) will come home every Friday and should be returned on Monday. Inside you will find important school correspondence, student work and teacher notes. Parent PTC Meetings: Held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Scholastic Book Orders: Scholastic book orders will be sent home once a month (on the 15th), please feel free to purchase books and send a check with your order. Lunch and Recess: Our lunch/recess time starts at 12:00 and goes until 12:40. Student lunches cost $1.95 and adult lunches are $3.50. If sending money please include student name on the check to make it easier for Debbie in the cafeteria. Snacks: We have a long afternoon with no outside breaks; students in the past have asked to bring in a healthy snack that they can eat during our Independent Reading time, which is okay with me. If you are sending snacks please make sure that they are nut-free and healthy! Additionally, I will not allow students to snack on candy and/or cake products, please make sure that they are healthy snack options. Birthday Parties: You are more than welcome to bring a treat on your child’s birthday, please let me know if this is what you are planning on doing. Salem-Keizer does not allow homemade baked goods in our classrooms! Please make sure they are store bought! If your child would like to have a birthday party and invite students from class please let me know and I can put invitations in Friday folders, I will not let students pass them out in front of others, I would hate to cause any hurt feelings. Volunteers: I love volunteers!! Last year they helped me in many different ways, from filing and gluing to meeting with small groups and helping on field trips. If you would like to volunteer please let me know if you haven’t already as I will be putting together a schedule of times. I would like it if volunteers could start helping in a couple of weeks as we are currently working on classroom routines and procedures and I am trying to get to know your children! I will work on getting to know you later! Weekly Correspondence: I like to send weekly “updates” to families via email, please make sure you have given me an email address to use. I have also created a blog this year: http://kalapuyarockstars.blogspot.com that I will be updating weekly! I will be sending a “test” email and I would ask that you respond to it with your child’s name so that I know each child is accounted for.
