Welcome to Room 228!

Hello Families!

I am excited to start our 3rd year here at Kalapuya!  I loved meeting our class on moving-on day and I can't wait to get our year started!!

At Kalapuya, we want our students to SOAR!!  Students are expected to SOAR in all areas of our school; cafeteria, hallways, bathroom, classroom, playground and more!  Students who have been identified will receive an award at a school-wide SOARing Assembly each month!

Help encourage your child to SOAR!!

Students are...
On task
Aware of Others
Responsible

Communication

Open communication is the key to a successful year!  You can always reach me during school hours via email or calling the school and leaving a voicemail.  I will check both each day and will return your call as soon as possible!  Additionally, you can check our blog it will be updated regularly with all important notices, homework assignments and reminders!  Newsletters will also be sent home once a month with reminders, special dates and upcoming information, these will come home in Friday folders.  Friday folders will also contain finished work, school notices, library/cafeteria notes and much, much more! Please look through this folder each weekend, finish any unfinished work and then return the folder to school on Monday.  If ever a situation arises that requires a conference please let me know and we can get one scheduled!!

Homework

All homework will be relevant and useful and will have a direct connection to what we are doing in class!  Homework will come home each week on Monday and will need to be returned on Friday.  I will try and keep homework as "stress-free" as possible; however, please expect that your child will have about 30-35 minutes of homework each night.  If it is taking longer please contact me and we can work together!  Your child will be given a homework folder at the beginning of the year and he/she should use this to carry assignments and/or books back and forth from school and home.

Behavior

My expectations for students are similar to expectations for all people.  Our classroom functions as a small community; a community that honors differences, understands each other, shows compassion, shows responsibility for self and others, respectful to all and are destined to succeed!  Throughout the year we will focus on our Kalapuya SOARing traits!  (Students are...On task, Aware of Others and Responsible!) I value communication not only with parents but also with students if "special issues" arise I expect that they will be talked about, dealt with and then moved on from.
If these issues require further assistance I will notify our principal, parents, counselor and/or anyone else needed to work through the problem.

Absences

There is a direct correlation between being successful in school and attending school EVERY day!  It is nearly impossible to reproduce lessons, class discussions, interactions and experiments that happen every day in our classroom.  In addition, when students have missed several days it leaves them feeling disconnected and confused about what is happening in class.  Of course I understand special circumstances and with some notice I can assemble a packet of "work" to be done, so that when your student arrives back at school they are feeling still connected with what we've been learning. Absences should be avoided if at all possible and students should be at school, in class, ready to learn at 9:00 AM!

Birthdays

Birthdays are a special time to celebrate! You are more than welcome to bring in store-bought goodies to share with the class, please send a short note, email or phone call so that we are in class and ready for you, when you arrive.

Snacks

Students are more than welcome to bring healthy snacks each day.  We spend time in the afternoon quietly reading and writing so please provide snacks that don't make too much of a mess! :)

Volunteers

I LOVE volunteers!! There are so many opportunities for helping in and around the classroom.  Please make sure that you have filled out a volunteer application in the office and that you are on our "approved" volunteer list.
